Early School Teachers Share Research and Insight Into Literacy During Parent Coffee Event

The educators shared the research and science behind young children’s development of literacy, and how play is a vehicle for promoting literacy in St. Margaret’s Early School.
St. Margaret’s Early School welcomed parents to campus for a morning of education and insight, as the division’s expert faculty shared a presentation titled “Literacy Development in the Early School” in the Library.

The event was well-attended, and featured enlightening research and insight shared by Early School Director Dr. Cris Lozon and Early School teacher Tammy Pipitone.

Dr. Lozon and Mrs. Pipitone shared the research and science behind young children’s development of literacy, and how play is a vehicle for promoting literacy in St. Margaret’s Early School. For example, one student recently wrote and hung a sign asking fellow students not to take apart a block structure. “Through play, children are naturally motivated to write, as they begin to understand the meaning and power behind the written word,” Dr. Lozon said.

The teachers also shared tips to promote literacy development at home, such as playing with sounds like rhyming and tongue twisters, modeling reading and writing as an enjoyable pursuit, offering materials and encouragement, and promoting self-help skills.

Parents also had the opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A session.

St. Margaret’s Early School faculty has regular parent education coffee events throughout the school year as a way to share their expertise on early-childhood development with parents.
