Grade 3 Students Explore Native California History
Grade 3 students took a journey through time at the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) where they explored the ways of life of the original inhabitants of Orange County.
Grade 3 students took a journey through time last week at the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) in Newport Beach, where they explored the ways of life of the Tongva (Gabrielino) and Acjachemen (Juaneño) peoples, the original inhabitants of Orange County.
The field trip provided an interactive experience that connected directly to upcoming social studies lessons on how Native Americans in local communities lived long ago. Along the Tongva Trail, grade 3 students discovered the natural environment as the region’s first people once did, learning how plants, tools, and traditions were used for survival and culture.
As they hiked the trail, grade 3 students identified native plants once used for food, medicine, and crafting. They practiced making string from plant fibers, used replica “rabbit sticks” for hunting activities, and even performed music with authentic Tongva instruments. In addition, grade 3 students created “money” using pump drills and took part in traditional Native American games that highlighted the importance of cooperation and skill.
The trip is designed to connect classroom learning with practical exploration, nurturing a deeper understanding of California’s natural and cultural heritage.
“Every year, Lower School students build on what they’ve learned before,” said Penny Mateer, grade 3 teacher. “Experiences like this bring history and science to life."
