Tartan Surf Represents at Scholastic Surf Series State Championships
St. Margaret's student-athletes had a big day in Oceanside.
St. Margaret's surf program sent 12 surfers to the Scholastic Surf Series State Championships held in Oceanside this past Monday and delivered outstanding results.
The competition brought together elite teams from across the California coast and inland regions, spanning San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Morro Bay. The day presented a clean, rideable swell and glassy conditions under a cool marine layer—ideal for high-performance surfing. Ry O'Hill, Brendan Lyons, Ethan Lavender, Gareth Thomas, Colt Ettwein, Chloe Eskander and Chloe Wainwright set the tone early for St. Margaret's in the shortboard division. Showcasing depth and talent with standout performances from Lyons, Lavender, Thomas, Ettwein, and Eskander all advancing into Round 2.
Momentum continued to build throughout the day as Lyons, Eskander, and Logan Cuda pushed through multiple rounds. Lyons and Eskander delivered standout performances all the way to the semifinals, where both surfers competed fiercely in highly competitive heats, ultimately finishing an impressive 4th in their respective semifinals.
As the tide filled in and the swell picked up, the longboard division faced more powerful, challenging conditions. Logan Cuda, Marcus Vojtus, Annika Tufo and Peyton Cruse rose to the occasion, demonstrating style, control and composure in the bigger surf. Cuda's strong wave selection and smooth execution advanced him deeper into the competition. In the bodyboard division, Sawyer Collins competed with grit and determination, holding his own against some of the top riders from outside our league.
Cuda continued his standout run, putting together a high-scoring semifinal heat that secured him a place in the finals. Facing the top longboarders in the state, Logan competed with confidence and composure in a stacked final heat. He capped off an incredible day by finishing 6th overall in the state in Men's Longboard—a huge accomplishment at this level of competition.
It was a day defined by strong performances, team pride, and Tartan grit. Congratulations to all of our surfers for representing Tartan Surf with heart, determination, and Tartan spirit!
