Spanish 3 Students Visit Mission San Diego de Alcalá for History and Language Studies

The Upper School students connected with language, culture and history at the oldest mission in present-day California.
Upper School students in Spanish 3 and Spanish 3 Honors visited the Mission San Diego de Alcalá in San Diego this week, as they connected with language, culture and history at the oldest mission in present-day California.

The trip was organized by world languages teacher Geovanna Fuertes-Besikof, and was preceded by classroom study of Mexican history.

“Students saw how the same colonial structures that existed in Mexico such as missions, the conversion of indigenous peoples, agriculture and Spanish cultural influence were also implemented in Alta California,” Mrs. Besikof said. “They were also able to compare the experiences of indigenous communities in California, such as the Kumeyaay, with indigenous communities like the Aztecs in colonial Mexico Nueva España.”
