Grade 6 Students Get in Olympic Spirit During PFW Activity
Grade 6 students in Physical Fitness and Wellness were in the Olympic spirit as they participated in a Winter Olympics-themed activity combining fitness with lessons in history and teamwork.
Grade 6 students in Physical Fitness and Wellness (PFW) were in the Olympic spirit this week, as they participated in a Winter Olympics-themed activity combining fitness with lessons in history and teamwork.
PFW teacher Staciana Winfield opened the class with a discussion about the origins of the Olympic Games, notable moments in Olympics history and stories highlighting sportsmanship and perseverance. Mrs. Winfield, who is also the Upper School Physiology teacher and head swimming and diving coach, shared her experience competing in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney and earning a gold medal as a swimmer. Her story offered students a firsthand perspective on the dedication and perseverance required to achieve at the highest level.
After the presentation, the students transitioned outdoors for a torch relay on Chalmers Field. Following the relay, the students were divided into teams and assigned countries to represent. Each group selected its country and began designing and decorating a flag, encouraging collaboration and creativity.
The class concluded with Olympic-themed music, as grade 6 students marched with their handmade flags in a celebratory lap that mirrored the pageantry of the Olympics.
Kudos to the PFW team with Leslie Pacheco-Manning and Trisha Marx for successfully collaborating in the plan and setting up this fun and engaging event!
