Middle School Band and Orchestra Students Take Center Stage at Disneyland Recording Session

Middle School band and orchestra students traveled to Disneyland for an immersive music education experience.
Last week, 48 Middle School band and orchestra students traveled to Disneyland for an immersive music education experience that blended performance, recording and a bit of theme park magic.

The Middle School musicians participated in the Disney Soundtrack Session, a hands-on workshop that placed them in a professional studio environment where film scores come to life. According to Chris Carbajal, band director, grades 7 and 8 students experienced the guidance of legendary Hollywood saxophonist Sal Lozano, where they had the opportunity to sightread selections from the animated film The Emperor’s New Groove and recorded the iconic Disney castle logo theme.

After rehearsing the pieces, students recorded their performance in a professional studio setting. The experience culminated with a screening of their recorded music synced to film on the big screen, a moment that allowed students to see and hear their work in action.

“The session gave us valuable insight into our strengths and areas for growth, and it was inspiring to see our students rise to the challenge in a professional setting,” Mr. Carbajal said.

The trip brought together both band and orchestra students, strengthening the Middle School music experience while offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the art of film scoring. Following the workshop, Middle School students spent the remainder of the day enjoying the park’s attractions, celebrating their accomplishments and building memories together beyond the classroom.

“Our trip to Disneyland for the Disney Soundtrack Session was an unforgettable learning experience,” Mr. Carbajal said.
