PHOTOS: ExEd Block Introduces Unique Learning Opportunities for Upper School Students

The experiential education (ExEd) block serves as a break from traditional academic subjects where students take part in nontraditional learning opportunities of their choice.
Upper School students spread out across campus to learn in new ways this week, as they took part in a variety of educational opportunities that build relevant life skills, foster health and well-being and promote community.
 
The experiential education (ExEd) block serves as a break from traditional academic subjects where students take part in nontraditional learning opportunities of their choice. This week’s ExEd block was for grade 11 and grade 12 students, while grade 9 and grade 10 students took part in service-learning opportunities.
 
Fanned out across campus and even off campus, the students tried new activities and learned new skills outside of traditional school subjects, taught by Upper School faculty. The ExEd opportunities included:
 
  • Life skills to prepare students for college and adulthood. This included car maintenance, cooking 101 and dorm room food preparation.
  • An opportunity to take part in a new sport or activity, including pickleball, ultimate frisbee, futsal, baseball and chess.
  • Health and well-being opportunities like hiking and restorative yoga & sound bath.
  • Arts and crafts activities like crocheting, paint by number and origami.
 
In addition, several students had the opportunity to take on leadership roles in the ExEd courses. Upper School students Rianne Ke, Ella Jia, Joelle Yang, Tai Guo and Sophie Bredall all served as assistant leaders and used their knowledge of specific ExEd subjects to assist their fellow students.
 
Students will take part in ExEd four times during the school year, alternating with service learning between grades 9-10 and grades 11-12.
