Upper School students in the Spanish IV honors and English IV: Latin American literature classes came together this week to take an impactful trip to the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture at the Riverside Art Museum. 

 

The classes, led by Upper School English teacher Kimberly Kim and world languages teacher Patricia Mejia, explored the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions of Chicano art during the visit. 

 

“Students were exposed to a diverse range of artistic styles and themes that not only celebrate Chicano culture but also convey powerful messages of identity, resilience and social commentary,” Ms. Kim said. 

 

The Tartans took a guided educational tour of the museum’s art collection, gleaning insight into the narratives and perspectives of Chicano artists.  In addition, students had the opportunity to create their own artwork inspired by the painting of pan dulce by Emmanuel Galvez. The experience allowed them to connect with the art on a personal level and explore their own creativity. 

 

“We are thankful for the museum staff for their warm welcome and enlightening tour. It left a lasting impact on our students,” Ms. Kim said. “We believe that experiences like these not only enrich our curriculum but also open our students' hearts and minds to the beauty of art and culture.”
