Battle of the Books Tournament Brings Competitive Readers to St. Margaret’s
St. Margaret’s had three teams in the tournament, all featuring Lower School students in grade 4 and grade 5.
St. Margaret’s welcomed readers from across the county to campus this week for the annual South Orange County Battle of the Books Tournament, which took place in the Darcy Rice Center for the Arts.
Battle of the Books, or BOB, is a competition featuring head-to-head matchups with teams answering questions regarding details from books on a 20-title reading list, adding a competitive aspect to reading. Teams receive points for answering with the correct title and the correct author.
St. Margaret’s had three teams in the tournament, all with Lower School students in grade 4 and grade 5. They competed against teams from Tarbut v’ Torah, Mission Basillica, St. Edward the Confessor Parish School, St. Anne, St. Junipero Serra Catholic, Mission Viejo Christian and Olivewood.
The students have been reading and preparing for the tournament since last summer. The teams met after school each Tuesday to discuss the books and prepare for the competition. The teams are coached by Lower School teachers Colleen Beshk and Lauren Johnson, Library teacher Darla Magana and Upper School junior Ciara Robertson.
Next year’s BOB book list will be released in time for summer reading. All grade 4 and grade 5 students are encouraged to join BOB! Reach out to Mrs. Magana for more information.
