Tartan Boys Are Cross Country State Champions

St. Margaret's gutted out a tight race to capture its fourth championship in boys cross country.
A week after sweeping the CIF-SS Division V Finals, St. Margaret's was poised to strike gold again at the CIF State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, November 24. An experienced field of runners added to the challenge of a difficult course.

The Tartan boys ran first, dominating the 5000m course while securing a 95-163 win over second-place finisher Lick-Wilmerding of San Francisco. The win was equally spectacular with the Tartans posting the largest margin of victory across all divisions. Sophomore star Jackson Adelman (15:39.50) narrowly missed finishing atop the podium, turning in an impressive effort just four seconds behind the leader. Adelman earned All-State honors for his performance on the course which ranks No. 2 all-time for St. Margaret's behind Billy Gaudreau's 15:28 posted in 2011.

The win marks the fourth boys cross country State Championship following titles in 1996, 2010 and 2011.

St. Margaret's girls competed in the final race of the day, looking to capture their first state title. Shea Hueston had the race of the day for the girls by moving into the No. 2 spot with the help of teammate Claire Mullen. The duo finished under a second apart at 19:45.9 and 19.46.2 respectively to bring the team within 5 points of the win. Andi Carnell (18:44.60) finished 6th to follow up her 2017 performance (8th), bringing home All-State accolades for the second year in a row.

“St. Margaret’s has been a distance running powerhouse for decades and we felt a strong obligation to honor the history of the school," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "The team’s performance on Saturday was a tribute to that legacy and the coaching staff is proud to see this extraordinary group carve out their place in school history. They earned everything they achieved this year, and it was exciting to see their tremendous efforts pay off.”

With the best-combined finish at the CIF State Championships in school history, an impressive finish to the 2018 season and a strong crop of runners, St. Margaret's is set to remain a force in cross country for the foreseeable future. Congratulations, Tartans!
