Tartans Conduct College-Level STEM Research at UC Irvine – See the Video!

St. Margaret’s has partnered with the UCI Samueli School of Engineering for 14 years, matching engineering and science students with UCI faculty members in a research area that aligns with the students’ interests.
Under the guidance of professors and graduate researchers at the University of California, Irvine, eight St. Margaret’s students spent this summer working on science and engineering projects and research in an intense college environment.

St. Margaret’s has partnered with the UCI Samueli School of Engineering for 14 years, matching engineering and science students with UCI faculty members in a research area that aligns with the students’ interests. The Tartans spend at least six weeks at UCI, gaining experience and knowledge alongside college professors and graduate researchers while also receiving college credit for their work. They reflected on their experience and shared their work during a reception at UCI last week.

The program is coordinated by St. Margaret’s STEAM Fellow Jennifer Ross-Viola. Interested students write an application essay in the spring and receive a teacher recommendation.

Here are the Tartans who worked at UCI this summer, and their projects:

Layla Shakerin, working with Professor Rachel Martin: “Amyloid Fibril Kinetics of Lysozyme.”

Kevin Zhu, working with Assistant Professor Aparna Chandramowlishwaran: “Automake and Website Development.”

Keely Yeargin, working with Professor David Reinkensmeyer: “Parkinson’s Disease and Its Many Devices.”

Drew Vollero, working with Assistant Professor Jaeho Lee: “Microstructures in Butterfly Wings Utilizing Radiative Cooling.”

Grant Kinsey, working with Professor Young Jik Kwon: “Quantifying Doxorubicin Release From a Bioactive Polyplex.”

Alex Kratzer, working with Professor David Reinkensmeyer: “Socially Assistive Robotics.”

Matthew Margason, working with Associate Professor Daniel Mumm: “Ceramics Processing for Gas Turbine Engines.”

Natalie Yee, working with Associate Professor Daniel Mumm: “Analyzing the Effects of Hot Corrosion on Metal Alloys.”
