Two St. Margaret’s seniors were named finalists for artist of the year by OC Varsity Arts, after receiving top honors in their respective specialty.

Blake Stevenson was named classical voice artist of the year, which qualified him to be one of three finalists in the vocal music category. Roger Penske, meanwhile, was named the sculpting and metalwork artist of the year, which qualified him to be one of three finalists in the 3D visual arts category.

After being named semifinalists—along with classmates Rachel Roy (theater) and Jeni Bauer (vocal music)—they were interviewed by a panel of distinguished artistic professionals and educators, which included a live presentation and a question-and-answer session.

Of Roger’s work, the judges noted, “Such sophistication for someone so young. His work incorporates his artistry, leadership and entrepreneurial skills, underscored by a sense of humility and teamwork.”

Of Blake’s performances, the judges stated, “For someone that has only been singing classical music for a few years, he is singing difficult work with authority. He has the raw material that could have much bigger potential.”

You can view all of the talented artists at the Orange County Register’s Varsity Arts section.
