Tartans Win Eight National Medals in Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

The national medalists represent less than 1 percent of the 350,000 works of art and writing submitted.
St. Margaret’s students were honored at the national level for their prestigious works in writing and visual arts, collectively winning eight national medals in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

The national medalists represent less than 1 percent of the 350,000 works of art and writing submitted. Work that earned gold keys at the regional level are considered for national recognition. St. Margaret’s had 26 total submissions to the national competition after a strong showing in the West Coast At-Large region.

Sophomore Nadia Farjami won three medals for her writing, including a gold medal for her poem “An Immigrant’s Crown.” Her poem “Medicine” and her critical essay “A Pink Invasion” earned national silver medals.

In addition, senior Kinsale Hueston earned a national gold medal for her poem “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” Kinsale won two gold medals last year and is currently serving as a National Student Poet, one of the highest honors in the United States for youth poets, based on previous Scholastic-winning works.

Other Tartans winning writing honors include grade 8 student Alana Godfrey, who won a silver medal in science fiction and fantasy for her work “Death is Safety.” Grade 7 student Tina Mai won a silver medal for her science fiction and fantasy piece “The Monster Under the Bed.”

In visual arts, St. Margaret’s senior Sarah Ko won a silver medal in photography for her piece “Inside Out,” while freshman Madye Arundale won a silver medal in film and animation for her work “Crystal Cave.”

As gold-medal winners, Nadia and Kinsale are invited to attend a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as participate in showcase events around New York City in June.
