Spring Sports Underway at St. Margaret's
The spring sports season has kicked off in successful fashion for the Tartans. Boys lacrosse and volleyball are featured in The Capistrano Dispatch's San Juan Spring Sports Preview

Boys Lacrosse
The 2-0 Tartans held off a second-half rally by the 1-1 Cathedral Catholic Dons to notch their first home win of the season, 11-8, on Thursday night. Kevin Groeninger and Trevor Peay recorded hat tricks while Andy Shin (2g), Stephen Deck (1g), Michael Chew (1g) and Nathan Sanchez (1g) were instrumental in the win. Faceoff specialist Stuart Pollard was 17/23 at the x and net minder Zane Handy recorded 12 saves.
St. Margaret's will face Los Angeles region foe Harvard-Westlake on the road on Saturday, March 10 at 5 p.m.

St. Margaret's routed Newport Harbor 17-5 on Tartan Field Tuesday afternoon to open the 2018 campaign. Cailin Young led all scorers with five goals and one assist while Nikki and Maddie Barkate each contributed four goals and an assist. Jordan Miles added a hat trick and an assist in the season-opening win. Goalkeeper Ellie Jones kept the Tartans in the lead with stellar saves and clearing passes all afternoon.
The Tartans will match up against visiting Park City (Utah) High School on Friday, March 9. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Baseball
The 1-1 Tartans are coming off a non-league 15-4 win over No. 9 ranked Webb School on Tuesday, March 6. St. Margaret's had 18 hits in the game led by Will Riddle (4-5), Caden Smith (3-4), Robby Gonzalez (3-5) and Nick Ostlund (3-4).
St. Margaret's will take on Rancho Christian at the San Juan Sports Park on Tuesday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m.
Boys Golf
The Tartan golfers have amassed a 4-1 record in early season play. The road has not been easy with weather and big programs standing in the way. St. Margaret's defeated Brethren Christian 200-291 to open Academy League play behind the 36 shot by Michael Etchandy. Yuki Bannai had a 38 while Kevin Guo shot a 40. Jack Wojick (41), Brendon Kong (45) and Victor Marron (45) rounded out the scoring for the Tartans.
St. Margaret's next faces Edison High School in a rematch of a March 1, 234-192 Tartan loss. Tee-time is 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13 at Marbella Country Club.
Boys Volleyball
The Tartans picked up their first win of the season Thursday night on the road against Oxnard High School. Match scores were 25-16, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-15. Tyler Aitken led the team with 12 kills.
The Tartans are participating in the Bishop Diego Tournament this upcoming weekend.

Boys Tennis
St. Margaret's has been successful in non-league play, winning three against Laguna Hills (10-8), Canyon High School (10-8) and Trabuco Hills (11-7).
The Tartans will take on Academy League rival Sage Hill School on the road Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m.
Swimming and Diving
The Tartan swimmers and divers are gearing up for the Santa Margarita Invitational, March 16 & 17.
Track and Field
St. Margaret's Track and Field athletes are preparing for the Irvine Invitational on Friday, March 9.
Senior Gavin Clarke Named Recipient of St. Margaret's Football Scholarship Award
Senior Gavin Clarke, who managed the team's statistics, scouting and video capture operations, has been named the recipient of the 2017-2018 St. Margaret's Football Scholarship Award.
The purpose of the St. Margaret's Football Scholarship Award is to provide a scholarship to a senior football team member who has been part of the program for all four years and is dedicated to the St. Margaret's community as a whole. The $20,000 award, provided by a generous donor, is awarded in four annual installments of $5,000 during the recipient's collegiate career.
Former interim head football coach Robert Healy said of Gavin, "In discussing the traits that Gavin brought to the Tartan football program and the way he conducted himself over the past four years, it is a recipe for success in life. Loyalty, confidence, humility and happiness. Gavin is always upbeat and cheerful with an infectious smile, which if you ask me, is what will be his legacy around St. Margaret's.”
Current head football coach Kory Minor remarked, "The tireless work ethic that Gavin displayed on and off the field will be hard to replace. The players are going to miss you, the staff is going to miss you and St. Margaret's is going to miss you."
Gavin is ready to continue his pursuit of a career in sports management and is currently entertaining college acceptance offers to determine the right fit.
