Middle School Students Compete in Fast-Paced Math Bee in Front of Student Body
The fast-paced, high-energy Math Bee had a bracket-style format and head-to-head showdowns solving challenging math problems.
With their peers cheering them on in Hurlbut Theater, 12 St. Margaret’s Middle School students competed in the 10th annual Math Counts Competition today.
The fast-paced, high-energy Math Bee had a bracket-style format and head-to-head showdowns solving challenging math problems. In the end, grade 6 student Fiona Lee won first place, while grade 8 student Preston Brinker took second and grade 8 student Henry Chai-Onn took third.
Math Counts is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement across the United States.
Each Middle School student at St. Margaret’s took a qualifying test in their math class, which was used to determine the top four in each grade level that would participate in the competition. The 12 competitors were Preston, Henry, Rylan Rodrigues-Zahn and Dean Woods from grade 8, Devin Thomas, Kate Matthew, Andrew Miehe and Jonathan Lee from grade 7, and Fiona, Radley Copps, Elise Lee and Rishabh Mallela in grade 6.
The top three won prizes, and Fiona will advance to represent St. Margaret’s at the upcoming regional competition.
Middle School math teacher Stephanie Windes served as host and posed the questions to the students, and was aided by teachers Veronica Johns-Richardson, Kellie Paul and Cori Samskey.
