Welcome Back! All-School Opening Ceremony Kicks Off 2017-2018 School Year

St. Margaret's welcomed its student body of 1,236 Tartans to the first day of the 2017-2018 school year on Wednesday.
The 2017-2018 school year officially started with a St. Margaret’s Episcopal School tradition, as the bagpipes roared to life with the familiar tune “Scotland the Brave” as the All-School Opening Ceremony kicked off the 39th school year in St. Margaret’s history.

“Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!” Head of School Will Moseley enthusiastically told the student body. “Welcome back and welcome home!”

The school year opens with 1,236 students, including 193 new students from 162 new families. There are 38 new students with siblings already here, and the new students include four sets of twins and one set of triplets.

Wednesday’s ceremony featured a welcome from St. Margaret’s senior and ASB president Blake Stevenson, who spoke of the support at St. Margaret’s that enables students to succeed.

Mr. Moseley especially welcomed the Class of 2032, enrolling in preschool this year, as well as the Class of 2018, who stood for an ovation during their last All-School Opening Ceremony.

Mr. Moseley also laid out three school-wide goals that align with St. Margaret’s mission of educating the hearts and minds of young people for lives of learning, leadership and service. The goals are:

-- The first goal, under Learning, relates to the CAIS/WASC Accreditation Self-Study, which Mr. Moseley described as “taking stock of where we are, how we got here and how we’ll continue to move forward.”

-- The second goal, under Leadership, involves deepening the implementation of the Strategic Plan, which Mr. Moseley said “leverages the culture of innovation we’ve been fostering.”

-- The third goal, under Service, involves moving from exploration of service learning to implementation. “We will dedicate class time for service learning, and we will embed service into the learning experience of all of our students,” Mr. Moseley said.

“In closing,” Mr. Moseley said. “I remain inspired and guided by our visionary founder, the Reverend Canon Ernest D. Sillers, who made his dream for building an Episcopal school a reality, when in 1979 he welcomed 79 students and a handful of teachers for the first school year.

“Just like Father Sillers, our love, our hopes and our aspirations for St. Margaret’s and our students will keep us moving forward toward a future that is ever evolving to continually fulfill our mission.”

Welcome back Tartans! Best wishes for a successful 2017-2018 school year.
