Reptiles, Rockets and Robots: Fun for All at Lower School Family Science Night

Lower School students and their families enjoyed dozens of exhibits lining the Campaigne Center and even spilling outside.
Campaigne Center was transformed into a science wonderland last week, as Lower School students and their families enjoyed dozens of exhibits lining the gymnasium and even spilling outside at the sixth annual Lower School Family Science Night.

The event was a hit, as attendees got the chance to hold snakes, blast off rockets, immerse in virtual reality and operate robots.

“Our family science night is a very hands-on event reminding students and families of the everyday applications of science all around us,” said Penny Mateer, Lower School science teacher. “We hope this fun night will inspire students to further develop their passion for science.”

The exhibitions were a combination of student-run, faculty-run and outside partners. Upper School students in the STEM club and the introduction to engineering class offered hands-on exhibits, while several Middle School students displayed their science projects.

Outside partners also had demonstrations, through the generosity of a PTF grant. Lizard Wizard brought a variety of reptiles for students to touch and hold, including snakes, turtles and frogs. The City of Newport Beach (a touch tank), The Ecology Center (a worms and soil exhibit) and AIAA OC Rocketry (a rocket launch outside) also brought popular demonstrations to the event.
