Tartan Boys Lacrosse Punches Ticket to CIF-SS Final With 19-8 Win

St. Margaret's shut down Mater Dei Tuesday night.
St. Margaret's boys lacrosse continued its postseason dominance with a 19-8 CIF-SS semifinal win over hosts Mater Dei. The Tartans will vie for their first CIF-SS title since lacrosse became a playoff-sanctioned sport in 2020. St. Margaret's will face 2021 champion Loyola High School in the Div. I final on Friday, May 10, at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange.

Austin Hicks led the way for the Tartans, notching 9 points on 8 goals and 1 assist. Andrew Toubin was a playmaker for the Tartans, dishing out 4 assists and tallying a goal himself to keep St. Margaret's offense humming. Caswell Friedman (3g), Johnny Iavarone (2g, 1a), Carson Barber (2g, 1a), Joseph Samluk (1g), Blake Scheel (1g) and Adam Horcasitas (1g) kept the Monarch defensive unit busy all evening.

Caswell Friedman also led the defensive effort, picking up  5 ground balls, while Matt Arena had a caused turnover in the win. Eben O'Brien made 10 stops for the Tartans.

The 2024 squad is looking to cement its place in Tartan lacrosse history with a win on Friday to join U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section championship teams from 2013, 2015 and 2019, as well as the Orange County/LA and State Club championship team from 2005. It won't be an easy road through a talented 16-5 Loyola team. The Tartans beat the Cubs 6-4 in the regular season and defeated Loyola 13-4 in the 2019 title game.
