Tartans Eye Postseason with Wins Over Orange
St. Margaret's basketball and soccer programs were in action last night.
The Tartan Basketball and Soccer programs are gearing up for a successful postseason by finishing strong in league play.
Girls Basketball
The Tartans downed Orange High School 59-12 Monday evening at home as they await the CIF Div. 3A postseason draw this upcoming Sunday.
St. Margaret's was lead by Lila Wohlgemuth's 17 points and 8 steals with 3 three-pointers made. Harper Gideons added 14 points and 3 steals, while Taylor Francois notched 10 points and 6 rebounds. Sophia Gazzaniga reached a milestone by moving into 4th place in program history with 250 rebounds in a single season.
The Tartans are ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Div. 3A and No. 18 in Orange County while tying a program record with 22 regular season wins.
Boys Basketball
St. Margaret's defeated hosts Orange 79-24 last night, improving the Tartans' record to 8-3 in league competition.
Senior Russell Frye notched his 1,000th career point against the Panthers.
St. Margaret's will look for a second-place league finish with a win against Santa Ana this upcoming Thursday.
Girls Soccer
The Tartans beat visiting Orange High 5-0 Monday night on Tartan Field. Avery Ainsworth and Ava Gardner netted two goals apiece, while Ava Meeks had a spectacular header goal off of a corner. Goalkeeper Riley Long kept the clean sheet for the Tartans.
"Although we started off a bit sluggish in the first half, we came out determined in the second half," said head coach Jenny Anderson-Hammond. "Recognizing that we needed to win to secure a spot in the CIF playoffs, the entire team displayed unwavering commitment on the field."
Boys Soccer
St. Margaret's boys soccer program completed the sweep of Orange High School, defeating the Panthers 4-0 on the road Monday afternoon.
Caswell Friedman opened the scoring for the Tartans, giving St. Margaret's a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Friedman again found the net to open the second half with Ryan Xu and Rex Li adding goals and closing the door on the Panthers.
The win seats the Tartans at No. 4 in the Orange Coast League and sets St. Margaret's up to compete in the CIF-SS wild card round on Monday, Feb. 5. There is a chance for the Tartans to move into third place and avoid the wild card playoff if Santa Ana loses to Estancia on Jan. 31.
