Tartan Boys Soccer Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive With Tie Against Santa Ana
St. Margaret's and the Saints played to a 3-3 result Wednesday.
St. Margaret's boys soccer program played to a 3-3 tie against Santa Ana High School Wednesday evening, preserving their chances for a CIF-SS Playoff bid.
Previously having beaten the Saints 2-0 on Dec. 15, the Tartans countered Santa Ana's ball handling and possession rate by playing a high-press style, attempting to keep the ball in the Saints’ end. The strategy proved fruitful for the Tartans, going up 2-1 on set-piece goals by Mitchell Allison and Nathaniel Kim. St. Margaret's maintained the lead going into the second half.
The Saints answered with a second goal in the second half before Caswell Friedman put the Tartans ahead 3-2 on a counter-attack goal. The Saints continued to press until notching the equalizer in the game's final minute.
"The 3-3 result was disheartening because the boys were working so hard and showed great discipline and character," said head coach Pete Carey. "Anytime you give up a goal in the last minute of play, that is hard to take. The upside is that our boys learned we can compete at this level, and when we are at our best, we can beat teams like Santa Ana."
The Tartans currently sit in 5th place in the Orange Coast League table. With upcoming games against No. 2 Saddleback (Jan. 19) and No. 6 CC Santa Ana (Jan. 24), positive results could propel the Tartans to postseason consideration.
