St. Margaret's Battles For Late-Season Wins
The Tartans look to a strong finish to the regular season.
The Tartan boys and girls basketball programs and girls soccer program picked up some much-needed victories this past week.
Boys Basketball
St. Margaret's defeated University High School 68-49 in the MLK Dream Classic at St. John Bosco Monday evening.
Russell Frye notched 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Cameron Danz added 20 points on five three-pointers despite missing most of the first half after finding himself in foul trouble.
"It was great to have the opportunity to compete in an event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King at St. John Bosco," said head coach Chris Nordstrom. "The kids really competed well on top of covering for two injured players in the win."
The 10-9 (3-3 in league) Tartans return to competition on Jan. 17 to take on league opponent Santa Ana High School. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Santa Ana.

The Tartans downed Santa Ana 52-23 in South Coast League action Tuesday evening. The win puts St. Margaret's at 18-4 overall and 7-1 in league competition.
Taylor Francois led with 11 points and 5 rebounds with Annika Tufo contributing 10 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Tilda Curran added 6 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks while Harper Gideons rounded out the scoring with 10 points.
"Last night was a solid and well-balanced win for the team," said head coach Josh Markum. "Everyone contributed, and we were able to execute multiple styles of play on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball."
The Tartans next take on Saddleback at home on Jan. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Girls Soccer
Avery Ainsworth broke the deadlock and led the Tartans to a 1-0 victory Tuesday evening against Santa Ana.
Ainsworth and the Tartans matched the Saints' intensity and physicality all evening to secure the win. Ava Gardner played a crucial role for the Tartans, taking on Santa Ana's defensive line and creating scoring chances for St. Margaret's. Gardner's wonderfully weighted ball to Ainsworth in the box resulted in the Tartans' goal to seal the win.
"The victory we achieved last night showcased the incredible teamwork within our team. Right from the start, our team displayed focus and determination. The team poured their hearts into the game until the final whistle," said head coach Jenny Anderson-Hammond. "This win was massive for the team and our position on the league table."
The 4-4 in league Tartans face Saddleback at home on Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.
