St. Margaret's Squeezes Orange High in Girls Basketball and Soccer
The Tartans picked up crucial league wins Thursday evening.
St. Margaret's netted two league wins over Orange Coast League foe Orange High School this week.
Girls Basketball
The Tartans picked up an important road win against Orange High School Thursday night, downing the Panthers 72-39.
Taylor Francois had 25 points with 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 6 steals, while Harper Gideons contributed 13 points, 4 assists and 4 steals to keep Orange on the back foot all evening. Sophia Gazzaniga had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
"Our group has shown a lot of resilience in the past 2-3 weeks. Christmas break provided us an opportunity to play five big games against really solid programs," said head coach Josh Markum. "We have been able to produce a lot of success despite an injury and illness-plagued roster. Ultimately, that experience has made us better and more well-rounded."
The now-healthy Tartans (No. 21 in Orange County) look to take on No. 22 Dana Hills High School on Saturday, Jan. 6. St. Margaret's defeated the Dolphins 52-49 at their last meeting in the Pacifica Tournament on Dec. 9.
Girls Soccer
St. Margaret's shut out the Panthers 2-0 Thursday, improving the Tartans' league record to 3-3.
Emma Tomlinson opened the scoring for the Tartans on a perfectly timed run, connecting with an Ava Gardner corner and volleying it in the back of the net. Gardner followed up the assist, slotting home a goal to put the Tartans up 2-0. Goalkeeper Riley Long anchored the defense and notched a well-deserved clean sheet.
"It was great to provide every player with valuable minutes on the field, allowing them to gain experience," said head coach Jenny Anderson-Hammond. "We are now looking forward to facing our opponents once again in the second round of the league."
The Tartans will travel to face Costa Mesa on Jan. 11 at 5 p.m.
