The Tartans outlasted Whitney High School 64-55 to capture the Calvary Chapel Downey Tournament Championship on Friday. St. Margaret's hoisted the trophy after going undefeated through the tournament.

Russell Frye had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Tartans in the championship matchup. Cameron Danz (10 pts), Mark Cyr (10 pts, 9 rebs), Caden Isola (10 pts), Austin Kang (10 pts) and Matthew Nordstrom (8 pts) paced the Tartans to the title. Cameron Danz and Russell Frye picked up MVP and All-Tourney honors, respectively.

"Nice win to finish out the tournament and take the title," said head coach Chris Nordstrom. "It is always important to learn how to win tournaments as we prepare for Tuesday's league opener at Costa Mesa."

Girls Basketball

St. Margaret's overcame a slow start and a 29-20 deficit at the half to down CIF Div. IIIA No. 2 Dana Hills High School 52-49 and claim the Pacifica Tournament crown Saturday evening.

In a hotly contested final, the Tartans were led by Harper Gideons (14 pts, 5 rebs, 3 three-pointers), Lila Wohlgemuth (12 pts, 5 rebs, 4 three-pointers), Sophia Gazzaniga (11 pts, 10 rebs) and Annika Tufo (8 pts, 6 rebs). Gazzaniga was named Tournament MVP, while Tufo earned All-Tournament honors.

"I am very proud of the toughness shown by our team this week. To beat four teams of that caliber in one week, two of the top 25 teams in Orange County and one being the No. 2 in our CIF division, says a lot about where our group is at and what their expectations are for this season," said head coach Josh Markum. "There's still plenty of season to go, but it gave us a lot of confidence knowing we didn't play our best but could still compete at that level."

The Tartans return to the hardwood to face Costa Mesa at home on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
