Tartan Basketball Programs Pick Up Tournament Wins
Both St. Margaret's varsity basketball teams are competing in local pre-season tournaments this week.
St. Margaret's basketball programs notched wins in the opening rounds of their respective tournaments this week.
Girls Basketball
The Tartans opened the Pacifica Tournament on Monday evening with a 64-23 win over Edison High School. St. Margaret's was led by Harper Gideons' 17 points and 4 steals, while Taylor Francois (11 pts, 4 steals) and Sophia Gazzaniga (8 pts, 5 rebounds) contributed to the win.
"Our team did a great job setting the tone in the first half with their defensive effort," said head coach Josh Markum. "We created many offensive opportunities by being active on the defensive end. We should take away several positives from last night that will carry over into our game tomorrow night against Pacifica Christian."
The Tartans will take on Pacifica Christian Orange County as the Pacifica Tournament continues on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Update: St. Margaret's prevailed in a close fought 36-33 win over Pacifica Christian.
Boys Basketball
St. Margaret's picked up a crucial road win, downing Monrovia High School 82-53 in the opening round of the Calvary Chapel Downey Tournament last night.
The Tartans had four players reach double figures; Caden Isola (17 pts), Austin Kang (12 pts), Russell Frye (12 pts) and Mark Cyr (13 pts).
"After battling with a tough Crenshaw team on the road this past Friday, it was nice to get back on the winning side," said head coach Chris Nordstrom. "This tournament provides us an opportunity to learn how to win on the road in preparation for league play."
St. Margaret's next faces Mary Star of the Sea in the CC Downey Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Update: The Tartans gritted out a 48-45 win over Mary Star of the Sea.
