Girls Cross Country and Everett Capelle Capture League Titles

The Tartans advance to the CIF Prelims on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Mt. SAC.
The Tartan girls Cross Country team took five of the top 10 spots at yesterday's Orange Coast League Championships to seal a decisive 30-point victory over second-place Santa Ana.  Sarah Bendzick, Joyce Li, Coco Johnson, and Cathy Chou went 2-3-4-5, respectively, in a solid group effort, with America Reyes-Mendoza rounding out the scoring with a 9th-place finish.

"We have only had our full roster together in a few races this season, so I was very impressed with how they connected with each other early and utilized their individual strengths to move the group into position," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "This course presented several strategic opportunities in the second half, but you must be tough to make them work in your favor. This group was certainly tough the entire way through, and I think they were inspired by the JV girls squad that posted a perfect score of 15 earlier in the day."

Although shorthanded due to illness and injury, the varsity boys team didn't flinch in going head-to-head with Div. I powerhouse Santa Ana.  Led by race winner and Orange Coast League Runner of the Year Everett Capelle, the Tartans finished second to qualify for the CIF Prelims. Capelle gapped the field early and was dominant throughout, and his teammates keyed off of the assertive efforts of Evan Causee to give the Saints all they could handle over the 3-mile course.

"I couldn't be prouder of how this group responded to adversity heading into this race.  Santa Ana is a deep and well-coached team, so they knew it would take a very aggressive race plan to be in contention," said coach Bendzick. "Their competitiveness and care for each other was second to none, and you couldn't ask for more as a coach."

The Tartans will advance to the CIF Prelims on Saturday, Nov. 4,  at Mt. SAC as they attempt to make their eight straight trip to the CIF State Championships.  Race assignments will be posted SMES.org once they are released by CIF over the weekend.
