Tartan Surf Program Opens Season With 64-30 Win

St. Margaret's came away with a 64-30 triumph over CVCS Saturday.
St. Margaret's surf team kicked off the 2023-2024 Scholastic Surf Series season with a bang, knocking off Capistrano Valley Christian School 64-30 in Huntington Beach on Saturday.
 
Heavy gloom and 2-3 foot swells set the stage for the competition before giving way to sun and higher waves as Sawyer Collins notched his first bodyboard heats for the Tartans. Charlie Denham, Jack Tomlinson, Blake Scheel, Ry O Hill, Peyton Cruse, Violet Yoshida, Ethan Lavender and Brendan Lyons all earned points for the Tartans in shortboard events, with Denham, Lavender and O Hill all advancing.
 
In the longboard events, Heidi Tufo, Braeden Nock, Luke Newman, Logan Cuda and Annika Tufo charged their respective heats, with both Annika and Heidi Tufo, Nock and Cuda advancing for the Tartans.
 
Top finishers who advanced to the individual finals were Charlie Denham who earned the win in Men's Shortboard, while Braeden Nock also grabbed the win in Men's Longboard. Logan Cuda finished 6th in Men's Longboard in his first series competition, while Heidi Tufo represented the ladies' squad, taking 6th in Women's Longboard. Newcomer Sawyer Collins placed 3rd in the bodyboard event.
 
St. Margaret's will host the next competition at San Clemente pier on Saturday, Oct. 28.
