Tartan Football Downs Eagles 26-20
St. Margaret's defeated CVCS at Saddleback College Friday night.
St. Margaret's football program defeated Capistrano Valley Christian 26-20 to pick up its first win of the 2023 campaign under head coach Dan O'Shea Friday evening.
The Tartans and Eagles, historically San Juan Capistrano rivals, met in a non-league contest in front of a spirited crowd at Saddleback College, trading scores throughout the first half and settling into a 20-20 tie at the half. Behind the protection of a stalwart offensive line, Quarterback Max Ruff and receiver Will Viola linked up for three passing touchdowns in the first half, keeping the Tartans level with CVCS. Ruff has thrown seven touchdowns through three games, finding Viola for four scores.
Both teams battled through a defensive struggle to open the second half, resulting in a scoreless third quarter. The Tartan defense led by cornerback Luke Newman and defensive end Leo Curran, stymied the Eagle attack, and had three fourth-down stops. Offensive breakthrough came late for the Tartans as running back Matt Arena plunged a four-yard TD run through the Eagle's defensive line to make it 26-20 St. Margaret's with 2:25 left to play in the game. Arena then deflected a crucial CVCS fourth-down pass to turn it over on downs and seal the win for St. Margaret's.
With the win, the Tartans improve to 1-2 on the year. Next up for St. Margaret’s, they head to Pasadena to take on 2-1 John Muir High School on Friday, September 8, at 7 p.m.
