Middle School Cross Country Teams Shine at St. Mary's Invitational

The Tartans continue to hone their craft in competitive environments.
In just their second meet of the season, the Middle School cross country teams turned heads on Thursday as they raced their way to impressive performances at the St. Mary's Cross Country Invitational. Competing against six other schools, the Tartans have shown significant growth and improvement from their first meet one week ago.

Grade 8 athlete Joyce Li led the way for the Tartans in the 7th and 8th-grade girls race, finishing third overall and completing the two-mile course in 15:00.0. Grade 7 athletes Hutton Nelligan and Quincy Krizman were just behind Joyce, and finished in 4th and 5th place, respectively.  Rounding out the impressive team scoring were Grade 8 athletes Arina Wagner and Annika Tufo. "It really is impressive to have five scoring runners so tightly packed. In a sport where you have to rely on each other, having teammates within reach gives the mental boost during a race," said head coach Edgar Vazquez.

Grade 6 students ran in a separate race and displayed the same depth of their older counterparts. Heidi Beshk impressed with a commanding performance as she finished 2nd overall in the race with a time of 15:24.4. Newcomer Megan Mohler finished just behind Beshk. Addison Oh was not far behind as she crossed the finish line in a time of 16:12.2

"Overall, it was a very successful day for the girls cross country team," said Vazquez. "We think the team is at the point where they see their potential and that hard work pays off on race day. The coaches are so proud of them and everything they have, and will, accomplish together."

On the boys side, Austin Stolper (13:59.1), Edward Leigh (14:00.1) and Pierce Frankfort (14:33.1) performed well in the Grade 7 and 8 race. The Tartans were supported in that race by Grade 8 athletes Ryan Mohler and Rohen Vargo. Grade 6 athlete Dan Olsen finished the two-mile course in a time of 17:08.7.

"The boys team are looking to put together a successful season as they continue to improve every meet," noted Vazquez. "While this meet was a non-scoring team competition, the boys’ grade 7 and grade 8 runners certainly did the job to ensure that the Tartans were a top team in the group of six."

The Tartans will next compete at the nationally recognized Mt. SAC Invitational on October 15. "The teams are really excited to take their racing to the next level. Mt. SAC will be a nice test for us because we usually see the best at the Middle School level. We think that we belong with the best, and we will be mentally and physically prepared to perform at our very best at Mt. SAC."
