Upper School Explores Theme of ‘Running Against the Wind’ at Honors Assembly

The assembly featured speeches by seniors Jackson Adelman and Bryce Chan and a musical performance by Tatiana Cloobeck.
St. Margaret’s Upper School had its final honors assembly of the 2020-2021 school year last week, celebrating the hard work and achievement of each student and hearing speeches from leaders of the senior class.

The assembly was a recorded webinar with the theme of “Running Against the Wind: Perseverance in the Face of Challenges” with speeches by Upper School Principal Jeneen Graham and seniors Jackson Adelman and Bryce Chan, who reflected on the gift of resilience which builds in challenging times.

“It is struggle and the ability to rise above the struggle that sets us all up for a more fulfilling life,” Dr. Graham said. “What we have learned this year is that difficult things that are out of your control will happen. You will face these challenges and you will overcome them. Knowing your power to overcome life’s challenges is the gift of resilience.”

Jackson, a senior on the cross country team, related his own experience as a runner and found in it a metaphor for the past year.

“Running into the wind isn’t necessarily fun or easy, but it’s not all bad,” said Jackson. “The same challenging aspect of running into the wind is what makes it so rewarding. Every step makes you that much stronger. The thing about running into the wind is that the wind won’t be against you forever.”

Bryce, meanwhile, reflected on her time in St. Margaret’s and shared some lessons learned as she prepares to graduate and matriculate to New York University to play soccer.

“My first challenge to you is no matter what you feel your insecurities are, try to embrace them,” Bryce said. “Try to not see them as obstacles, but as something that makes you who you are.”

The assembly ended with a powerful vocal performance by senior Tatiana Cloobeck, who sang “Don’t Rain on My Parade” in a music video produced by St. Margaret’s band director Chris Carbajal.
