Here are five tips for creating a new routine with your children:
By School Counselor Dr. Janice Avalone

We all cope better with some sort of routine and schedule in our lives. Now more than ever, setting up a daily routine for you and your family gives a sense of security and predictability to the day. Here are five tips to consider with your children:

  1. Set up a routine. Make a schedule every day for you and your child that includes your to-do lists and work time as well as your child’s academics, exercise, downtime activities, and child-interest learning activities.
  2. Playtime, Downtime, Family Time (PDF). It is easy for activities to blend together when working and doing school from home. Find time for PDF and create a balance in your day.
  3. Voice and Choice. During non-academic periods of the day, broaden the definition of learning by having your child engage in topics they are interested in. Many family arts and culture resources, like museums, aquariums, and even NASA, have online content geared toward children.
  4. Assign Chores. Assign age-appropriate chores for all members of your family. Not only does this help create shared responsibility to the household, it contributes towards building a healthy self-esteem.
  5. Read for Pleasure. Shifting our attention towards the small everyday pleasures such as reading for enjoyment, can create tiny moments of relief which serve as a buffer for stress and anxiety
