With New Robotics Lab and Increased Interest, FIRST Lego League and FTC Robotics Start Year Strong

Both the Lego League team and FTC Robotics team had competitions last weekend, starting a school year full of events on a high note.
St. Margaret’s FIRST Lego League program for students grades 4-7 and the FTC Robotics team for grades 8-12 experienced a surge of growth this year, with more than 45 Lower, Middle and Upper School students taking part.

The teams have a new home in the Library’s robotics lab, which opened this school year and gives students a permanent space to build and test their creations.

FIRST Lego League
Seven St. Margaret’s teams with a total of 37 students grades 4-7 participated in the FIRST Lego League qualifier on Sunday at Dana Hills High. The teams included St. Margaret’s first-ever all-girls team.

The Tactical Tartans (Will Viola, Soren Olsen, Jackson Miller, Vaughn Bosu, Drew Otto and Ian Ekvall) won Runner-Up Champion at the qualifier. The Tartan Technicians team of Ross Johnson, Gavin Shams, Kasra Haghighat, James Gianulias and Drew Ghandehari won first place Core Values award. Both teams qualified for the FLL Championship, which will take place at Legoland in Carlsbad next month.

Three other St. Margaret’s teams—Turbo Tartans, Tartan Storm and Tartan Pixels—advanced to the FLL Cup, which will take place at Legoland in February.

FTC Robotics
The FTC Robotics team, which consists of five boys and four girls in grades 8-12, competed in a practice meet in Costa Mesa, ranking fourth out of 13 teams.

The season’s task is to build a robot that picks up blocks, transports them and stacks them. While Saturday’s contest was just a practice, the first scored meet will take place on Nov. 23.

The team includes Preston Brinker, Italivi Diaz, Espen Garner, Tanner Harden, Jack Justus, Wendy Liang, Chloe Lias, Alexis Lindenfelser and Benjamin Simpson.
