Junior Jake Vandenburg Takes Fourth Place at High School State Surfing Championships

Vandenburg capped a tremendous 2018-2019 campaign with a strong showing.
St. Margaret's junior Jake Vandenburg matched up with some of the best high school surfers in California, bringing home a fourth-place finish at the High School State Surfing Championships held at Oceanside South Jetty on April 15.

Competing amongst 108 surfers ranging from Marin County to Coronado Island, Vandenburg earned his place in the finals after six grueling heats. Conditions were in the 3- to 4-foot range, with a peaky combo of south and northwest swell in the water. A great measure of his prowess in the water, Vandenburg's performance and fourth-place finish set him among the best in the state.

"I am extremely proud of Jake and his performance this past Monday. It was a full day of relentless competition with California's top talent competing on one stage for State Championship titles," said head coach Peter Soderin. "Jake's relentless commitment to improving in speed, power, and flow these past several years is really starting to pay off. He is a great competitor and one of the most successful surfers I have ever had the privilege of coaching. I don’t see him stopping any time soon and I am truly excited to see how much further he can go as a competitive surfer."
