Upper School Physiology Students Explore the Wonders of the Nervous System

Upper School students in Physiology class recently explored the mysteries of the human nervous system through a series of engaging, hands-on activities.

Guided by Staciana Winfield, Upper School Physiology teacher, students are learning how the human body runs on electrical currents—tiny impulses that travel along the nervous system and shape our sensations, thoughts, and actions. “I want them to recognize that through new experiences and intentional habits, we can harness neuroplasticity throughout our lives to continually grow, adapt, and positively influence our well-being,” said Mrs. Winfield.

To reinforce these concepts, the class participated in a reflex arc partner lab, where students tested each other’s reflexes. This practical activity gave them a firsthand look at how the nervous system responds automatically to stimuli. “They have a lot of fun with the lab because they get to work together to see how and why their bodies respond to stimuli. It’s a great way to increase their curiosity for how their bodies work and what a miracle it is that it responds automatically because of the anatomy and physiology of the human body,” Mrs. Winfield explained.

Upper School students also enjoyed a bingo activity designed to reinforce nervous system vocabulary. “The more they see the words and use the words, the easier it is to recall them in the future when they are pursuing their medical careers,” noted Mrs. Winfield. By making learning interactive, the class ensures students not only understand the science but also develop a language for it.

Physiology, a yearlong science elective in the Upper School, nurtures logical and critical thinking, scientific literacy, and fosters a lifelong interest in science.
