Grade 5 Celebrates Lower School Milestone With Beloved Red Sweater Toss

St. Margaret’s current grade 5 students — the Class of 2033 — marked a major milestone this week as they celebrated the conclusion of their Lower School journey with one of St. Margaret’s most cherished traditions: the ceremonial red sweater toss.

Following their final Lower School Chapel, students processed onto Chalmers Field as younger Tartans lined the walkways, applauding and cheering them on during the annual clap-out celebration. Surrounded by classmates, teachers and families, the grade 5 students tossed their iconic red sweaters into the air for the final time, symbolizing both a farewell to the Lower School and the beginning of their next chapter in Middle School.

The annual tradition has long served as a meaningful rite of passage for St. Margaret’s students, giving younger grades an opportunity to celebrate their departing peers while honoring the accomplishments and growth of the class.

As the future Class of 2033 prepares to enter Middle School, the red sweater toss serves as a joyful sendoff.

“To our families: thank you for your partnership, support, and trust,” Lower School Principal Jennifer Blount said in her Chapel homily. “And to the Class of 2033: we are so proud of you. We cannot wait to see the adventures, accomplishments, and friendships that await you in middle school and beyond. Congratulations, grade 5!”
