Grade 5 Students Mark Milestone with Three-Day Retreat

Grade 5 students experienced a three-day retreat last week, marking a significant rite of passage as they prepare to transition from Lower School to Middle School.

The trip, the Lower School’s first overnight retreat in several years and its first extended three-day experience of its kind, took students on a journey by train, bus, and boat. The group departed early Wednesday morning from the San Juan Capistrano Train Station, traveling north before continuing by bus to a camp in Ojai.

Once on site, grade 5 students settled into cabins and quickly immersed themselves in outdoor programming, including high ropes courses, team sports, swimming, and collaborative activities designed to build independence and strengthen peer connections. Evening programming featured campfire gatherings and group challenges, encouraging a sense of community among classmates.

On the second day, students traveled by boat from Ventura Harbor to Santa Cruz Island, part of Channel Islands National Park. The island excursion connects directly to the grade 5 science curriculum led by David Beshk, including the study of the island fox. For many students, spotting the fox in its natural habitat was a highlight of the trip.

Guided by park naturalists, students explored the island’s unique ecosystems during a coastal hike, learning about native plants, wildlife, and environmental conservation. The excursion blended outdoor adventure with hands-on science learning in a memorable setting. In the evening, grade 5 teacher Todd Clarke led a lively game of bingo—one of the class’s cherished traditions.

The retreat concluded Friday with a return to St. Margaret’s campus, where grade 5 students gathered for a final meal and reflection as emerging Middle Schoolers.
