Upper School Musician Earns Top Honors at State and Regional Levels

Upper School talent in the St. Margaret’s music program, was named to the California All-State Symphonic Band placing her among the top high school flutists in the state.
Gloria Zhou '28, a flutist in the St. Margaret’s music program, was named to the California All-State Symphonic Band this week. She earned first chair flute, a distinction that places her among the top high school flutists in the state. Selection is based on a highly competitive audition process drawing students from across California, with only a small number of flute players chosen each year.

In addition to her All-State success, Gloria also earned first chair flute in the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Symphonic Band. SCSBOA is the region’s leading music organization, and its symphonic band is similarly selective, featuring top student musicians from throughout Southern California.

Auditions for both ensembles require extensive preparation, including advanced repertoire and scales, and are evaluated by expert panels through live auditions or recorded submissions. Acceptance alone is considered a major achievement. “Being awarded first chair signifies that Gloria was ranked as the top flute player in each ensemble, a role that carries leadership responsibilities and solo performance opportunities,” said Chris Carbajal, band director.

Congratulations Gloria!
