Tartan Cross Country Excels at Pacific Hill League Championships
St. Margaret's boys finished first while the girls squad battled to a second-place finish.
St. Margaret's cross country programs capped off an exciting regular season with exceptional results at the Pacific Hills League Championships at Irvine Regional Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The boys squad raced to a first-place finish and a second consecutive league title, scoring an almost perfect 17 points (1:16:55, 1-2-3-5-6-13-14 finish order). St. Margaret's took control of the race early and set the tone, executing the racecourse tactics flawlessly. Zach Causee placed first with a personal record time of 14:58. Samarth Wadhwa (2nd, 15:05), Malcolm Capelle ( 3rd, 15:26), Zaiden Gurusamy (5th, 15:34), Maddux Labovitch (6th, 15:48), Jimmy Ye (13, 16:27) and Benjamin Harrison (14th, 16:29) supported the Tartan effort. St. Margaret's top four finishers earned a place in the top 10 of school all-time records.
On the girls side, Joyce Li (3rd, 18:52) led the Tartans to a second-place finish, just behind a very strong Laguna Beach squad. The Tartans put themselves into the mix early and refused to back down against stiff competition. Heidi Beshk (5th, 19:07), Yumi Yeh (11th, 20:15), Kate Sullivan (12th, 20:22), Megan Mohler (13th, 20:34), Cate Heyming (15th, 21:39) and Catherine Chou (16th, 21:42) kept St. Margaret's on the board.
"The coaches were very proud of how the team competed and believe the results are a great indicator that both teams are hungry and ready to compete this postseason," said co-head coach Ryan Thompson. "We are excited to get started preparing for a CIF title run."
The Tartans will next compete at the CIF-SS Prelims on November 14 at Mt. San Antonio College.
