Lower School students at St. Margaret’s were treated to a literary celebration this week as two award-winning children’s authors visited campus for an inspiring day of book readings, author talks, and personalized book signings.

Randi Woodward Larsen, a local best-selling and award-winning author and former St. Margaret’s parent, met with grade 3 students in the Library for a reading of her acclaimed picture book, Moonlight and Wishes. With a background in traditional oral storytelling, Larsen brought a unique, heartfelt energy to her session, encouraging Lower School students to explore the magic of imagination and the importance of believing in their dreams.

Ms. Larsen encouraged Lower School students to embrace the power of their own creativity and imagination, as vivid illustrations from Moonlight and Wishes were projected alongside her reading.

Meanwhile, at Sillers Hall, renowned children's author Margo Sorenson, whose literary career spans more than 30 published works, spent the morning engaging with grade 1 and 2 students. Known for her rich storytelling and memorable characters, Sorenson captivated Lower School students with readings from one of her books. Ms. Sorenson's most recent titles include Little Calabash, Spaghetti Smiles and Calvin Gets the Last Word. Lower School students had been eagerly preparing for Ms. Sorenson’s visit, reading her books during library time over the past several weeks.

In addition to their readings, both authors shared insights into their writing processes from brainstorming and redrafting to editing and publishing, offering students a behind-the-scenes look at the journey from idea to finished book. The authors reinforced St. Margaret’s commitment to the reading and writing process, inspiring Lower School students as they learn to express themselves as thoughtful writers and creative thinkers.

“We were incredibly lucky to welcome these two remarkable authors to St. Margaret’s,” said Library teacher Darla Magana. “Their visit not only celebrated great literature but also encouraged our students to see themselves as storytellers, dreamers, and creators.”
