Tartan Track & Field Comes Out on Top Against Costa Mesa

St. Margaret's battled the Mustangs Thursday afternoon.
St. Margaret's track and field program competed in a thrilling match-up against Costa Mesa High School on Thursday.

On the boys side, The Tartans would strike first by winning the 4x100 and beating the No. 1-ranked team in the league. St. Margaret's momentum would be followed by a big day in the shot put, where the Tartans swept the event with a score of 9-0, led by Battle Gideons, the event winner. However, the throws team was not done there as they also went on to sweep the discus led by Cooper Devries, who now has back-to-back wins in the event. The field events continued to score big as the Tartans would sweep the triple jump and come in 2nd in the long jump.

On the track, Everett Capelle would continue dominating the distance events, winning all three of his races. Caden Gazzaniga would also keep his undefeated streak alive, edging out a win in the 400m with a personal best time of 52.69, making him the new No. 1 400m sprinter in the league.

The boys team would finish the meet with a 74-53 win.

"Today was incredible! When we pre-scored this meet the boys were on the wrong end of the result, so they knew coming in that they had to have big performances," said Tartan head coach Edgar Vazquez. "The boys didn't just have a big day; they had an unbelievable day!"

The girls' track and field program would once again show its dominance and win the meet by 65 points. The 4x100 team started the Tartans off on the right foot by winning their event with a season best time of 51.21. Strong performances by Sarah Bendzick and Joyce Li would carry the points on the distance side. Sophia Karahalios would get a pair of wins in the 100m and 200m to help score points on the sprints side. Coco Johnson went on to win her 400m race and made her debut in the long jump, winning the event with a mark of 15ft and 5 inches; this result places her No. 2 in the South Coast League in the event.

In the field events, Marisol Guillena and Grace Li finished 1 and 2 in the shot put. Addie West also had a big day coming in 2nd in the long jump, and Ava Klausner finished first in the high jump. The girls would also sweep the triple jump, with Caitlin Roberts winning the event and Taylor Francios coming in 2nd.

"The girls, as usual, were dominant, and I can't begin to explain just how talented they are. They have been winning big all season, and watching them perform has been such a joy," said Vazquez. "I want to give a big shout-out to my coaching staff for how many hours they put in with the kids. They prepared them for this battle of the two undefeated teams, and the result showed how well our coaches did with the team."

The girls won the meet by a score of 94-29.

"This was the most balanced team effort win I've seen in my time as a head coach, and I am just so proud of the kids and how they competed," said Vazquez.
