PTF Grants Bring STEAM, Health and Wellness Tools to Classrooms

The grants are funded through a variety of PTF events and programs—including the Online Auction, the Library Luncheon, the Book Fair and a portion of the funds raised at the Forever Plaid all-school fundraiser.
St. Margaret’s Parent Teacher Fellowship approved its fall 2018 grants, which touch all divisions of the school and feature equipment upgrades, new tools and experiences for both students and faculty.

The grants are funded through a variety of PTF events and programs—including the Online Auction, the Library Luncheon, the Book Fair and a portion of the funds raised at the Forever Plaid all-school fundraiser.

“The grant program is one of the PTF’s most important initiatives, as it takes the incredible support of our community and directs it toward learning tools for our students in the classroom,” PTF President Jill Golubow said. “We are so grateful for everyone who supports the PTF’s fundraising efforts throughout the year, which makes it possible to enhance learning opportunities at St. Margaret’s through these grants.”

Some of the grants approved this cycle include:

  • The Lower School was granted STEAM learning tools for kindergarten and grade 1 students in the new Lower School Outdoor Classroom. The new tools include a self-powered conveyer belt, an outdoor balance, sandbags, a block and tackle, an outdoor magnetic wall and a rubber ramp.
  • The Upper School science department was granted five Leica digital microscopes for use in life science classes.
  • Athletics was granted FirstBeat Lifestyle and Class Assessment Monitors, which enables the measurement of daily periods of stress and recovery for students and faculty. The data can be used to influence decisions related to stress and recovery, sleep, physical activity, energy expenditures and other lifestyle goals.
  • The visual arts department was granted an Artec 3D scanner for use in 3D art projects.
  • The Lower School science classroom received a grant for a variety of items for outdoor science exploration including a wind tunnel, sedimentator, thermometer and orbiter.

In all, 10 general grants were approved. The fall grant cycle is the first of two grant cycles each school year, and are funded in January so the granted items can get into the classrooms during second semester.

The spring grant cycle funds are made available on July 1 for the following school year.
