Preschool Welcomes Reggio Emilia Artist-in-Residence to Campus

St. Margaret’s welcomed Daniela Arbizzi to the Early Childhood Development Center this week for the first of seven visits in her role as Artist-in-Residence. Ms. Arbizzi will observe, conduct demonstration lessons, lead meetings and ultimately help enhance the role of art in St. Margaret’s Preschool curriculum.
“She will help our faculty understand the role of art as another way for children to express their thoughts and understanding through their creativity,” St. Margaret’s Preschool Director Cris Lozon said. “She will help us deepen children’s understanding through projects that originate from children’s play. We know that play is good for children, but guided play—which enriches their learning through teacher scaffolding—helps children build theories on how the world works.”
Ms. Arbizzi was born and raised in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and is currently the program specialist at the Cerritos College Child Development Center. St. Margaret’s research-based, play-based Preschool curriculum is aligned with the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, of which art is an important aspect. St. Margaret’s Preschool faculty spent 10 days in Reggio Emilia, Italy in 2017 closely studying the approach.
During her first visit this week, Ms. Arbizzi observed St. Margaret’s early childhood curriculum and worked with Dr. Lozon and the faculty to explain the role of art in the Reggio Emilia approach. In future visits, she will lead meetings and demonstrate ways St. Margaret’s can more purposefully use art as a learning tool in the Preschool.
“She will model how we can better create an art curriculum that purposely follows children’s ages and stages,” Dr. Lozon said.
