Tartan Girls Win California Middle School State Cross Country Championships

The Tartans captured the state title on Thursday afternoon.
The best middle school teams from across California competed in the Middle School State Championships on Thursday at the Riverside Cross Country course. St. Margaret's girls team proved up to the task, coming away with the team title.

“We knew it would be an eye-opening experience for the girls, but we also had a lot of faith and confidence in them. We’ve seen them train since August and knew they were a special group," said middle school head coach Mike Allison. "That’s why we decided to bring our top runners together to race in the more competitive team championship race.”

By relying on each other and believing in themselves, they took advantage of the moment and the opportunity before them. When the final score was tabulated, the Tartans edged out the second-place team by a single point.

“That’s about as close as a cross country race can be, and it proves that this is a team sport through and through. Each girl mattered, and each girl contributed to this state championship,” said Allison.

The 2018 girls squad included grade 8 students Maddie Bendzick, Charlotte Newman, Emma Griffin, Annabel Thiel, and Ali Botuchis; grade 7 student Sarah Groeninger; grade 6 students Sarah Bendzick, Giselle Vartanian, Ava Gardner, and Addy Griffin.
