Tartans Debate Team Performs Well at Tournament Hosted by St. Margaret’s

St. Margaret’s welcomed six schools and 27 debate teams from across Southern California to campus on Saturday for a High School Public Debate Program tournament.
Teams of three students debated several relevant U.S. topics ranging from compulsory voting in U.S. elections, universal basic income for all residents, the size of the Supreme Court, and candidate vetting prior to elections.

The Tartans had three teams participate. The team of Joey Westendorf, Keyon Talieh and Claire Allison placed third overall, and Keyon (6th-place speaker), Joey (7th-place speaker) and Claire (14th-place speaker) each received individual recognition. Also participating was the team of Kaelyn Dunnell, Jack Manor and Andrew Ahn, and the team of Gavin Ashman, Peter Mack and Alex Kratzer.

The Tartan debate team meets weekly during lunch and also has after-school practices leading up to competitions. The team is coached by Upper School English teacher Kimberly Kim, and competes in several tournaments throughout the school year.
