St. Margaret's Captures League Titles in Cross Country

The Tartan cross country program closed out the regular season with decisive victories at the Academy League Finals last week at Irvine Park. Both varsity teams posted perfect scores of 15 by taking the top five spots in their respective championship races. The Tartans went one step further by placing all seven runners in the top 10.

“To post a perfect score in any championship is rare, but to do it with other CIF Southern Section ranked teams in the field is extraordinary. We are very proud of what we were able to accomplish today”, said Head Coach Patrick Bendzick.

But it was not an easy win. The girls team had to overcome pre-race adversity when the always-solid Andi Carnell was stricken with the flu. She boldly stepped to the line and put forth a tremendous effort, but it was sophomore Claire Mullen that was able to win the race by going wire-to-wire. It was an aggressive effort, and she was named the league’s Female Runner of the Year as a result.

Senior Robbie Graham capped his Academy League career with a narrow victory over teammate Jackson Adelman. The duo broke from the field at the 2-mile mark, and Graham edged Adelman with a veteran move in the final 100 meters. Graham was also named the league’s Male Runner of the Year.

As a result, the Tartans collected the following league awards:

Boys First Team All-League
Robbie Graham
Matthew Colglazier
Calvin Capelle
Jackson Adelman
Harrison Tanaka
Grant Kinsey

Girls First Team All-League
Claire Mullen
Charlotte Jones
Andi Carnell
Kat Collier
Julia Martin
Madye Arundale
Shea Hueston

Next up for the Tartans is the CIF Prelims Saturday, Nov. 10 in Riverside. Both teams enter the postseason ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section and will look to advance to the CIF Finals on November 17 at the same location.
