The Tartans defeated Aquinas High School 7-2 to kick off the 2018 football season.
In a defensive battle to the final whistle, St. Margaret's came up with a season-opening victory over visiting Aquinas High School 7-2.
The Tartans keyed on two big defensive plays, an interception by freshman Cooper Barkate and a strip by senior Langston Sholl with a recovery of the resulting fumble by junior Lucca Carson in the win. St. Margaret's defensive unit was stellar all evening, led by seniors Koa Todd (nine tackles), Nick Falshaw (seven tackles) and Jack Young (seven tackles). Junior Caden Smith was solid for the Tartans at linebacker, contributing seven tackles, while Sholl added four.
Offensively, senior QB James Mott went 11-17 for 111 yards, connecting with senior receiver Will Riddle for a 39-yard touchdown strike early in the first quarter. Senior receiver Alex Smith pulled in two catches for 50 yards while senior back Alex Lanham had 26 yards on 14 carries.
The Tartans will take to the road to face Excelsior Charter of Victorville on Saturday, August 25. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
