The highest team GPA in each sport category by enrollment determines the winner. Schools are divided into two enrollment categories, 1,500 and above and 1,499 and below. The team with the highest GPA in each enrollment category for each sport receives the award.

The boy's track & field team will be honored in a pre-game ceremony before the May 1 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game versus the Baltimore Orioles.

St. Margaret's Director of Athletics Patrick Bendzick remarked about the Tartan's continued academic and athletic success, “Winning a CIF Southern Section Academic Team Award shows the tremendous dedication our students have towards the concept of being a scholar-athlete. Coupled with the success they have experienced in competition; their academic achievements are a shining example of how it’s not necessary to compromise one for the other.”
