Memorial Service Brings St. Margaret’s Community Together to Honor David Boyle

Hundreds of St. Margaret’s past and present faculty and staff, trustees, families, and alumni joined the Boyle family for the poignant service held Saturday.
The St. Margaret’s Episcopal School community filled St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church to honor and say goodbye to founding faculty member, retired Associate Headmaster and Faculty Emeritus David Boyle at the public memorial ceremony planned by his family. Hundreds of St. Margaret’s past and present faculty and staff, trustees, families, and alumni joined the extended Boyle family for the poignant service held Saturday. Mr. Boyle’s immediate family, wife Marilynn, son Michael ’03, daughter-in-law Rebecca and granddaughter Lyla also attended.

Eulogies were delivered by retired Headmasters Markham Campaigne, 1986-2003, and Marcus Hurlbut, 2003-2013, Middle School Principal Jeannine Clarke, and Upper School Director of Community Life Lora Allison. St. Margaret’s Head of School William Moseley offered the Prayers of the People, and retired Lower School Principal Barbara Deubert, and Mr. Boyle’s niece, Rachel Bonhall, delivered the readings.

“David was an incredible school leader. In the early years of the school he did practically everything and I can say without a doubt that St. Margaret’s would not be the institution that it is today without David Boyle,” said Mrs. Clarke. “He was a lifelong learner, and he was pushing the school to be more than even seemed possible in those early years. He was enrolling this tiny institution in data collecting groups, working to create evaluation systems, writing procedures and policies, ensuring our emergency preparedness, completing our accreditation … in the early years it was his voice and actions laying the foundation for a sustainable institution.

“I know he took great pride in what the school has become, and yet he did not want or need to tout his very large part in making it happen. But, we know that it is because of his voice, his work and his vision that the school was able to successfully become the school it is today,” Mrs. Clarke said in a sentiment that was echoed by many in attendance who knew Mr. Boyle throughout his more than three decades of contributions to St. Margaret’s.

The speakers also shared reflections on Mr. Boyle’s extraordinary ability to connect with all those he encountered and make them feel valued. In homage to a tradition born during Mr. Boyle’s Upper School leadership, Messrs. Campaigne and Hurlbut and Mmes. Clarke and Allison asked the congregation to stand as they named ways Mr. Boyle touched their individual lives, from recipients of the David G. Boyle Lifetime Service Award or his classroom students, to hires of Mr. Boyle, or those who had ever enjoyed a camping trip with him. Fittingly, by the end, nearly all attendees were standing, illustrating Mr. Boyle’s tremendous impact on thousands of lives throughout the Tartan family.

St. Margaret’s Director of Choral Music Stacey Miles performed the Commendation Anthem, “A Gaelic Blessing,” accompanied on piano by founding faculty member Susan Remsberg. A touching film presentation shared pictures of Mr. Boyle throughout his professional and personal life. The service concluded with a congregation singing of St. Margaret’s Alma Mater.
