Espen Garner Named National Broadcom MASTERS Semifinalist for Innovative Science Project
Espen is one of 300 semifinalists in the prestigious STEM competition.
St. Margaret’s freshman Espen Garner was named a semifinalist in the 2017 Broadcom MASTERS, the nation’s most prestigious STEM competition for middle school students. Espen’s “Buzz Trap” science project last year as a grade 8 student places him among the top 300 in the U.S. out of more than 6,000 nominees judged by distinguished scientists, engineers and educators.
As a semifinalist, Espen is in the runnng to be a top-30 Broadcom MASTERS finalist, which will be announced later this month. Finalists go to Washington D.C., in October to present their research and compete in hands-on challenges for prizes, including a $25,000 top prize. The Broadcom MASTERS program is produced by the Society for Science & the Public.
Buzz Trap is a 3D-printed mosquito trap affixed to a drone that allows for testing of mosquito-borne illnesses in hard-to-access areas.
The innovative product has received numerous honors. Espen teamed with fellow Tartan Logan Wojcik to win first place and beat out high school and college entries in the ocMaker Challenge. They also won St. Margaret’s Tartan Tank, an event created by grade 8 science teacher Eric Harrington which spotlights entrepreneurial science projects and pitches them to venture capitalists.
Espen also submitted Buzz Trap to the Orange County Science Fair and won first-place honors in applied mechanics as well as three special recognitions—the Isenberg Memorial Award, the Office of Naval Research Award and the Beckman Chapman Design and Engineering Award. For winning the Beckman Chapman Award, Buzz Trap is on display at Chapman University.
