St. Margaret's Swimming & Diving Program Finishes Strong

The Tartans has a successful year in the water, improving with each contest.
The Tartan swimming and diving program capped off an impressive season in the pool at last week’s Academy League Championships. The team took first in 9 events and had 25 swimmers in the top 3. The Varsity teams had their best team finishes in years while the JV girls claimed their 3rd consecutive team title.

The varsity girls swim team was led by 2nd team all-league senior captain Katalina Aviles who continued to show her dominance in the pool. She claimed 2nd in her signature event, the 500 freestyle with a personal best of 5:58.26 and took 4th in the 200 free (2:12.62). Freshman Grace Zhou was equally impressive in her rookie season by touching 3rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.45) and placing 5th in the 200 IM (2:22.57). These two swimmers teamed up with teammates Jocelyn Leung (Sr.) and Claire Allison (So.) to take 2nd in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:05.40. Both Leung and Allison took 4th place in their individual events (Leung – 4th 100 back: 1:08.52; Allison – 4th 500 freestyle: 6:30.52). Additional swimmers who made the championship finals include: senior Natalie Bosu (7th 200 freestyle), Leung (6th 200 IM), Allison (5th 50 freestyle), junior Natalie McAleer (7th 50 freestyle), freshman Ashley Jones (8th 100 fly), junior Alison Meany (7th 100 breaststroke), and freshman Jacqueline Leung (6th 200 freestyle).

The boys had their highest league finish in the history of the program culminating in the first ever league relay title for the Tartans. The quartet of Rowdie Peets, Owen Young, James Whiting, and captain Mathew Joseph took the league title in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.40. Freshman Owen Young showed his speed by claiming 3rd in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.28) and 100 backstroke (59.59) while freshman teammate Rowdie Peets took 3rd in the 100 freestyle (55.77). Junior Whiting had two 4th place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:02.84) and 500 freestyle (5:28.49) while Josephs tied for 4th in the 50 freestyle (25.22). Other top 8 finishes on the boy's team include senior captain Nick Scheel (5th 200 and 500 freestyle), senior Jack Westhead (6th 200 IM and 100 breaststroke), freshman Johnny Kurtz (7th 50 freestyle), Mathew Josephs (6th 100 freestyle), and Rowdie Peets (5th 100 backstroke).

The girls JV team claimed the Academy team title by distancing themselves from runner-up Whitney by 16 points. On route, the girl's team had individual victories from sophomore Samantha Behle (200 freestyle 2:34.91), junior Louisa Miller (100 IM 1:16.59, and 50 breaststroke 37.55), sophomore Tiana Baird (100 freestyle 1:12.64), and junior Marissa Mitchell (36.12). Baird and Behle joined freshman Megan Short and sophomore Kelly Smith to take the 400 freestyle relay title in 5:01.71.

The boy's team swam to a second place team finish on the strength of junior Parker Ryan who took 1st in both the 50 and 100 freestyle (27.88 and 1:05.12) while freshman Aidan Rooney took the runner-up spot in both races (28.85 and 1:05.47). Freshman Nick Whiting also took 2nd in the 100 IM (1:24.26) and 3rd in the 50 breaststroke (39.75) for the JV team.
