Surfing Dominates in Team Competition

St. Margaret's surf team had a great outing January 8, bringing home a win in team vs. team action against JSerra Catholic High School. With excellent conditions at Huntington Beach Pier, the Tartans came through with a great team effort.

In shortboard competition, Kelly Smith, Jake Vandenberg and Gunnar Gehl all placed first in their respective heats while Ayla Fox (second), Solomon Banks (third), and Aidan Rooney (third) had successful afternoons.

In the longboard, Ayla Fox placed first and was backed up by the second-place finishes of Chantz Norris and Andrew McAleer. Jake Vandenberg had a strong showing in the event, placing third.

The Individual portion of the contest was postponed to a later date due to a shark sighting and stingray activity.

Head Coach Pete Soderin said, "I’m proud of the way our team surfed in Huntington. The conditions were beautiful, glassy and 3-4 feet all day. We had great momentum going into the individual portion of the contest until the shark showed up. In my 18 years of coaching surf teams, this is the first time we’ve had a shark sighting postpone an event. Out of our six heats versus JSerra, we had four of our surfers come out on top earning first place. I’m excited to see how all of our advancing surfers do as they move forward when the contest resumes, January 22nd at San Clemente Pier."
